How Much Data Does a Business Trip Use? 10GB Sized for the UK, EU & USA (2026)

Business traveller using a 10GB GleeSim data SIM hotspot for a laptop in Europe

Your sales director lands in Frankfurt and opens their laptop. Two hours later, the roaming bill is bigger than the hotel bill.

That happens because nobody sized the data before the trip. This guide fixes that. It shows how far a 10GB business travel data SIM goes across the UK, EU and USA. It breaks the numbers down by job role and by trip length, so finance can sign it off in five minutes.

Is 10GB enough for a business trip?

Yes, for most short trips. 10GB covers about one week of email, maps, messaging, cloud documents and around one hour of video calls a day. It is not enough for daily laptop hotspotting, HD video meetings all day, or several staff sharing one connection. In those cases, choose a bigger or pooled plan.

Think of 10GB as a fuel tank. How far it goes depends on how hard your team drives.

What uses the most data on a business trip?

Video and laptops use the most. Messages and email use almost nothing. A one-hour HD video call uses about 0.5–0.7GB. One hour of HD streaming can use up to 3GB. Email, WhatsApp text and maps use a few megabytes each.

5 ways to make 10GB last for the whole trip

  1. Download offline maps before you fly. Google Maps and Apple Maps both work offline for the main city areas. That saves data and means directions still work in a dead zone.
  2. Stop silent cloud sync on the laptop. Pause OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud Photos and Windows Update while on the hotspot. In Windows, set the hotspot connection as "metered" so the laptop backs off by itself.
  3. Run video calls in standard quality. Switching off HD video in Teams or Zoom can roughly halve the data a meeting uses. Audio-only uses even less.
  4. Use hotel Wi-Fi for big jobs, but only through your company VPN. Large uploads and software updates belong on Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi without a VPN is a security risk for client data.
  5. Check usage on day two. Open your phone's mobile data settings. If one app is eating the tank, fix it now, not on day five.

One SIM for the UK, EU and USA: why businesses use a separate data SIM

A separate multi-country data SIM gives you a fixed, known cost for travel data, instead of a surprise roaming bill on the company phone contract. You keep the normal SIM for calls and texts. The data SIM goes in a dual-SIM phone, a tablet, or a portable 4G/5G router (MiFi) that the whole team can share.

Here's why that matters to the business:

  • Predictable spend. One fixed price per SIM. Finance knows the cost before the trip.
  • No roaming bill shock. Many UK contracts now charge daily roaming fees in the EU, and the USA is often pricier still. Check Ofcom's guidance on mobile roaming.
  • Multi-network access. The SIM can use more than one partner network, so it isn't stuck on one weak signal. We explain how that works in When One Network Isn't Enough.
  • Works in routers. Put it in a 4G/5G router and one SIM connects several laptops at a client site or exhibition stand. This is mobile broadband (MBB) for travelling teams.

What if your team needs more than 10GB?

Choose based on how many devices share the connection, not just on how long the trip is. One phone on a sales trip fits in 10GB. A laptop on a hotspot, or a stand with three devices, doesn't.

  • Heavy single user (calls + data): an unlimited roaming SIM covering the EU and USA. See our O2 Unlimited roaming SIM guide.
  • Teams of 5+, regular travel: a bespoke pooled data plan. All the SIMs share one data bucket, so light users cover heavy ones. Everyone gets one invoice.
  • Events, pop-ups, site work abroad: a 4G/5G router plus data SIM bundle, with or without the hardware.
  • Card machines or kiosks that travel: M2M/IoT SIMs, with a fixed IP where the payment or remote-access system needs one.

That's what a boutique telecom company does differently. GleeSim is based in Livingston, Scotland, and has been in UK telecoms since 2006. We build connectivity around the business: M2M, IoT, mobile broadband and business mobile contracts, with or without hardware. That serves SMEs, corporates and enterprise teams alike.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10GB enough for a week's business trip to Europe?

Yes, for phone-first use: email, maps, messaging, CRM and about an hour of video calls a day. If the traveller hotspots a laptop every evening or runs HD video meetings for several hours a day, 10GB can run out within five days. Pick a bigger or pooled plan in that case.

How much data does a Teams or Zoom call use?

A one-to-one HD video call uses roughly 540MB per hour. A group HD call uses around 675MB or more. Turning off HD or using audio-only cuts this sharply. Audio calls use well under 100MB an hour.

Can one data SIM work in the UK, EU and USA?

Yes. GleeSim's 10GB multi-network data SIM has roaming enabled in the UK, EU and USA. Check that every country on your route is covered, including stopovers outside the EU. GleeSim can confirm this for your exact itinerary.

Can I put the data SIM in a portable Wi-Fi router for my team?

Yes. The SIM works in most unlocked mobile Wi-Fi hotspots and routers, so several laptops can share it. Remember that every device takes data from the same 10GB. A team of three needs roughly three times the data.

Is this a data-only SIM, or does it include calls and texts?

It is sold as a data SIM. Keep each traveller's normal business SIM for calls and texts. A dual-SIM phone can run both at once. If your team needs calls, texts and data on one SIM abroad, ask GleeSim about unlimited roaming business plans.

Can GleeSim build a travel data plan for my whole company?

Yes. GleeSim creates bespoke business connectivity: pooled multi-country data, routers with or without hardware, IoT and M2M SIMs, and business mobile contracts. Tell us the countries, the number of travellers and the devices, and we'll quote a plan with one invoice.

10GB covers a typical phone-first business trip of up to a week across the UK, EU and USA. Laptops on a hotspot, all-day video and shared routers are what drain it. Size the trip by role and by device count, not just by days, and nobody comes home to a roaming bill.

Stop paying roaming roulette. Give your travelling team one fixed-price data plan built for where they're actually going.
