Rent or Buy a 5G Router in the UK? The Month-7 Rule

Rent or Buy a 5G Router in the UK? The Month-7 Rule

Quick answer: If you need internet for less than six months, rent a 5G router. If you need it for seven months or more, buy one and add an unlimited data SIM. Using GleeSim's 2026 prices, buying overtakes renting at around month seven. After that, every month you rent is money you didn't need to spend.

That's the whole decision. The rest of this guide shows you the maths, so you can check it for your own site.

What's the difference between renting and buying a 5G router?

A 5G router is a box that takes a mobile signal and turns it into WiFi. Think of it like a phone that shares its internet with every laptop, till and camera in the building.

  • Renting: you borrow the box and the data for a monthly fee. You send it back when you're done.
  • Buying: you pay once for the box and keep it. You then pay a separate monthly fee for a data SIM to put inside it.

Renting is like hiring a van. Buying is like owning one. Both get you there. The cheaper one depends on how long the trip is.

The router arrives pre-configured. You plug it in and connect. No engineer, no landline, no setup calls. The minimum rental is one month.

Buying has two parts: the router once, plus a data SIM every month.

When is buying a 5G router cheaper than renting?

Buying a 5G router becomes cheaper than renting at about month seven. A Teltonika RUTM30 (£359) plus a Three unlimited SIM costs less in total than GleeSim's six-month rental rate once you pass six and a half months. From that point on, buying saves you over £55 every month.

Five things to check before you decide

  1. Coverage at the exact address. A strong 4G signal beats a weak 5G one. If one network is patchy, a multi-network SIM can switch to the strongest.
  2. Do you need a fixed IP? Standard data SIMs use a dynamic IP (it changes). CCTV, VPNs, remote access and POS often need a static IP. That rules out a standard rental.
  3. Wired ports. Count devices that need Ethernet (tills, NVRs, access control). Industrial routers give you more LAN ports and external antenna sockets.
  4. How sure is your end date? If a "three-month" project often runs to nine, buying protects you from a rental bill that keeps ticking.
  5. Fair use. GleeSim's Three SIM has no data cap. The O2 business SIM has a 650GB monthly fair-use limit, which covers most routers.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a 5G router?

Renting is cheaper for anything under six months. Buying is cheaper from around month seven. With GleeSim's prices, a 12-month need costs £959.88 to rent but £611 to buy with a data SIM.

Can I rent a 5G router for one month in the UK?

Yes. GleeSim rents 4G/5G WiFi routers from a one-month minimum at £99.99 ex VAT, with unlimited UK data included. Longer rentals cost less per month.

Does a rented router come with unlimited data?

GleeSim's router rental includes unlimited UK data, a pre-installed SIM and pre-configured settings. You plug it in and connect, with no separate data plan to buy.

Which 5G router should a business buy?

For site offices, CCTV and backup internet, an industrial router such as the Teltonika RUTM30 or RUTX50 is the safer choice. Both have dual SIM slots, so the router can switch networks if one fails.

Can I use a rented router for CCTV?

Yes, for viewing and uploading footage. If you need to log in to cameras remotely on the same address every time, pair a purchased router with a fixed IP SIM instead.

Do you offer packages for multiple sites?

Yes. GleeSim builds bespoke corporate and enterprise packages covering routers, data SIMs, fixed IP and business mobiles across multiple UK sites, billed on one account.

Short job? Rent. You get a router, a SIM and unlimited data in one box, and you send it back when you're finished.

Long job, or lots of jobs? Buy. From month seven, owning the router saves you money every single month, and it moves with you to the next site.

Not sure which one you are? Tell us how long you need it, where it's going and what you're plugging in. We'll tell you the cheapest way to do it, even if that means a smaller order.
