Why solar PV installations need a bi-directional meter in the first place
A standard import meter only counts electricity flowing into the building. The moment you connect solar PV, a battery or any co-located generation, energy flows both ways, and a one-way meter starts lying to you.
The Emlite Single Phase Bi-Directional Generation Meter (ECA2-BI) is built for this. It is a compact, MID-approved 100A meter with 1,000 pulse/kWh output that measures active energy in both directions and cycles through three readings on the display:
- Import – kWh drawn from the grid
- Export – kWh sent back to the grid
- NET – Import deducted from Export, the figure Ofgem's Feed-in Tariff rules use for co-located generation and storage reporting
It is DIN-rail mounted and designed for tight consumer units, which is exactly the problem. Tight consumer units, metal cabinets and under-stair cupboards are radio dead zones. Which brings us to the SIM.
Does an Emlite GSM meter need a SIM card?
Yes. An Emlite GSM-enabled bi-directional meter uses a mobile network SIM card fitted to its communication module to send Import, Export and NET readings to the MeterOnline monitoring platform. Without a working SIM the meter still records energy locally, but every reading has to be collected on site by hand.
Here is how the SIM actually operates inside the unit:
Installation. The SIM sits in a push-push holder on the underside of the Emlite communication module attached to the meter. Some units ship with a pre-installed, pre-registered SIM. Many do not, and many installers replace the supplied SIM once the first-year bundle expires or the network proves unreliable at the site.
Network coverage. Emlite modules are commonly paired with network-resilient roaming SIMs that switch between available mobile networks when local signal is poor. This avoids manual SIM swaps, which at £80 to £150 per engineer visit is where remote metering projects quietly lose their margin.
Data transmission. The meter encodes usage statistics and sends secure messages over GPRS across the mobile network. MeterOnline decodes them and presents Import, Export and NET on the dashboard for billing, FIT or Smart Export Guarantee evidence, and O&M alerts.
That is the entire value chain, and every link in it depends on a SIM that is online when the meter wants to talk.
The three things that break cellular meter reading (and how GleeSim fixes them)

1. Single-network SIMs in metal cabinets
A standard EE, O2, Vodafone or Three SIM locks the module to one network. If that network's nearest mast is on the wrong side of the building, the meter goes dark and stays dark.

2. Your AMR software cannot reach the meter
Consumer and most business SIMs sit behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). The meter can push data out, but nothing can call in. If your head-end or AMR platform needs to poll a meter, trigger an on-demand read or push a configuration, a dynamic-IP SIM simply cannot be found.

3. No SMS on the SIM profile
Emlite modules and most cellular meter modems accept over-the-air configuration by SMS. That is how suppliers push the APN string, the server address and reporting intervals to hundreds of devices without touching them. A data-only SIM profile cannot receive that text, so every unit needs an engineer with an optical probe.

How much data does a GSM bi-directional meter use per month?
A GSM generation meter transmitting daily Import, Export and NET totals typically uses under 5MB of data per month. Meters sending half-hourly load profiles usually consume between 15MB and 30MB per month. Plan with headroom for retries, firmware updates and MeterOnline handshakes, so a 50MB to 100MB pooled allowance per SIM is the practical sizing for most UK deployments.

Two things installers routinely get wrong:
Pooling beats per-SIM caps. One meter in a strong-signal location will use 3MB. Its neighbour behind a transformer will retry constantly and use 18MB. A pooled allowance across the estate absorbs that variance without overage charges on individual units.
GPRS is not forever. Emlite's current GSM modules communicate over 2G/GPRS. UK operators have committed to switch off 2G and 3G by 2033, and 3G is already largely gone. Any SIM you deploy today should be on a network path with a 4G LTE-M/NB-IoT migration route, or you are budgeting for a second site visit within the meter's life.
