How a static IP SIM lets UK farms watch gates, yards and livestock sheds from anywhere — even where fibre never arrived.
The problem: farms are watched targets with the worst signal in the country
Most UK farms sit exactly where rural crime is highest and broadband is weakest. Machinery sheds, fuel tanks, remote gates and livestock buildings are often hundreds of metres from the farmhouse router — well past the reach of household WiFi, and in plenty of cases beyond any fixed line at all. Fitting a camera or alarm out there is the easy part. Being able to actually check it from your phone, from the kitchen, from market, or from the other side of the country, is where most set-ups fall down.
The cost of getting this wrong is rising. NFU Mutual's latest Rural Crime Report puts the cost of rural crime in the UK at £41.5 million in 2025, with quad bike, ATV and livestock theft all climbing sharply year on year
— exactly the kind of loss that a monitored gate or yard camera is designed to catch early.
At the same time, connectivity on the farm itself remains patchy. A House of Commons Library briefing on rural mobile coverage confirms that while most of the UK landmass now has 4G from at least one operator, coverage from every network is still far from universal in rural areas — meaning a single-network SIM in the wrong spot on the farm can leave a camera or router with no signal at all.
What a Fixed IP SIM actually does
A standard data SIM gets handed a new IP address every time it reconnects — fine for browsing, but useless if you need to dial back into a specific camera, router or alarm panel from outside. A Fixed IP SIM (also called a static IP SIM) assigns one permanent public or private IPv4 address to that SIM. Whatever it's plugged into stays reachable at the same address every time, so you can view live footage, open a VPN tunnel, or pull sensor data on demand — no app subscription, no relay server, no guessing which IP it's on today.
